Selling my car was so easy. I used Carvana and they made it so simple. The price is set, no back and forth which I loved. They have you answer a few questions, fill out a form and upload a couple of documents. Once that is done, they set the appointment to pay you and pick it up. It really is just that simple. No gimmicks and no worrying. I even sold it over the 4th of July weekend and it was still a breeze. Selling my things for the big move to Hawaii was my fear, but it was so easy.
Selling my stuff
Facebook to the rescue! Nope, not Facebook Marketplace but a group I made and invited anyone to join. You can learn more about the details here on my Youtube channel It is simple and you have control over who can actually join the group and who you feel comfortable selling to.
Parting with things can be difficult for some but for me, it was all part of my cleansing my past and starting new. In Utah, I had a large storage unit that had a ton of stuff. Realizing that I had gone 3 years without needing it,I flew out there and got rid of it all. I kept photos, gave some things to my kids and gave the rest away to friends. I had a few moments of heart strings pulling, like when I looked at my wedding album but I threw it away. It was my past and I did not need to keep that. I kept a few photos from it so my kids will have them if they ever want them but I no longer needed it. He was my past life and this was my new life..MY life.
When I got back to Michigan, I sold almost everything I had. I kept a medium sized box which I gave to my daughter to store for me. It had things I wanted to keep but knew they did not make sense to bring Hawaii. I shipped 12 medium boxes to my new place and brought 2 large suitcases and my little dog. That is all. Everything I needed, I bought new and had shipped to my new apartment. I called the leasing office and set that up with them and they were happy to help.
When I arrived to Honolulu, my bed, sheets, dishes, towels, decor etc was all in my place just waiting to be unpacked. It made the whole process so easy. I used the money that I made selling my old things, to buy the replacement things for Hawaii. It was pretty much an even trade and made more sense than shipping it all. I have never regretted it. New stuff is always fun anyway!
Was it worth it?
Yes seems like such a simple answer. Hell yes seems so cliche’. I guess the answer is absolutely. Not a day goes by that I don’t miss my kids and my grandchildren but I also know they all want me happy. Knowing I have a wonderfully full life here makes them happy. And isn’t that what we all want for the people we love? To be happy and fulfilled and living a life they dream of?
The move to a new place can feel undoable and overwhelming. It is overwhelming for moments but it is fabulous when it is your reality. I will admit, the nights before I moved I kept thinking if it all fell apart and I had to stay on the mainland, it wouldn’t be “so bad” but that was fear. It was second guessing myself and my ability to do it. Don’t let fear guide you to places that are easy. Take the risks. You can always move again.
I know I sound like a broken record but I LOVE my life here. I love that I was able to put myself first and love myself enough to do what I wanted to do with no other reason. It wasn’t for a job, a relationship, a need..it was for a want. A want is selfish and being selfish is ok when it is not hurting others.
Live the life you want. Do it. It can be so beautiful.
